As a store born out of and based in Scotland, we are proud to offer a brand that shares this Scottish link. INSTRMNT is a Glasgow-based design studio, brand and, as of earlier this year, a store. Started by designers Pete Sunderland and Ross Baynham who met each other at Glasgow Caledonian University, studying Product Design & Graphic design respectively. INSTRMNT has its ties in 20th century modernist industrial design, and has particularly strong visual links to Dieter Rams' iconic designs for Braun.
After personally investing into INSTRMNT to get prototypes off the ground, Pete & Ross took the decision to raise further funding through crowd-funding platform, Kickstarter. “Personally, I thought Kickstarter would detract from the value of the brand, but actually it’s totally been the opposite,”, Pete stated in an interview with 'Dezeen'. INSTRMNT ended up beating there funding goal by nearly 5x.
INSTRMNT has won over stockists rapidly since releasing their first watches in the market and have done so whilst keeping their brand identity strong and sticking to a set of rigid & strong brand principles. The founders have gone on record stating that they were initially warned off from creating an analogue watch by one of their university lecturers amid the emerging market of the Apple Watch and other smart watches, however INSTRMNT stuck to their principles of creating a watch that took design cues from amp meters, volt meters and analogue dials.
